Student Identity and Engagement

TCU Student Identity & Engagement is a department within the Division of Student Affairs. Located in the Intercultural Center in the Brown-Lupton University Union, our mission is to promote diversity, inclusiveness, and cultural awareness throughout the TCU community. TCU Student Identity & Engagement also provides students of diverse backgrounds with the necessary resources to transition into college life and succeed on campus and beyond.

The department provides support, guidance, and encouragement to TCU students, faculty and staff throughout a variety of services including cultural programming, mentoring, diversity training, and academic and community involvement. Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to assist with the planning of events and programming. In addition to student services, TCU Student Identity & Engagement assist the University with institutional planning and policy formation regarding diversity and inclusiveness.

In partnership, the Office of Student Identity and Engagement and the Office of LGBTQ+ Resources offers a leadership certificate program for Texas Christian University students that promotes a supportive and energizing learning environment designed to help students envision their own future. The DEI&B Leadership Certificate program provides engaging workshops and programs aimed to optimize students’ capacity to grow and flourish in a diverse and changing world, by building their skills, knowledge, and awareness. Improvement in these areas enhances participants’ ability to effectively engage and work with diverse populations and value the lived experiences of all students and respect one’s inherent dignity and the value each of them adds to our community. Registration into the certificate is not required, enrollment is automatic upon attendance of any of the following workshops. Please note that the leadership certificate program is only available to the TCU undergraduate student community.

 

We offer comprehensive Identity Based trainings tailored to meet the unique needs of your organization or group. Our sessions cover a range of topics, from fostering inclusive environments to understanding the impact of systemic inequalities. We also offer customizable training options to fit your specific goals and challenges.

The Impact Squad is dedicated to increasing student participation in the Intercultural Center, a vital space on campus offering resources, cultural programming, and enriching experiences. Students in this squad will assist in planning and organizing monthly events.

SIE Mentorship Program is to equip students of color with the skills, knowledge, and connections to assist them in becoming inclusive and equitable leaders within the TCU community. The goal of the program is to promote student engagement and learning through a mentorship model that allows students to embrace the identities they hold and to provide equitable opportunities and access to the students of color here at TCU.

  • Transformation through experiential learning
  • Develop personal and academic goals

Requirements of the Program

  • Have a 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Be a student of color
  • A “student of color” is a term used to refer to students who belong to racial or ethnic groups that are not categorized as white or of European descent. This includes, but is not limited to, students who identify as:
    • African American or Black
    • Hispanic or Latino
    • Asian or Asian American
    • Native American or Indigenous
    • Pacific Islander
    • Middle Eastern
    • Multiracial (identifying with more than one racial or ethnic group that includes at least one non-white group)

The term is often used in discussions about diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational settings to highlight the unique experiences, challenges, and contributions of these students.

  • Be actively involved in at least one activity on campus
  • Be first-year students, first-time in college students, and new transfer students

Program Expectations

  • Responding to and communicating with your peer mentor and SIE GA in a timely manner.
    • Your mentors will be checking in with you on a regular basis. Responding to them in a timely manner shows respect and appreciation for their time and effort.
  • Mentees will be expected to attend all monthly large group meetings, attend three (3) SIE programming events and all Mentorship related events and programs, and meet with their mentor at least twice a month.
